The Fall River Jr Rod & Gun Club was organized in 1946 with its objective being to teach youngsters about the safe handling of firearms, marksmanship, sportsmanship, and respect for fish and game laws along with the rights of land owners whose land they use. Boys and Girls between the age of 12 and 17 years are eligible for membership. The junior members pay a small yearly fee and the rest of the expenses are absorbed by the club.
A Sr. member volunteer advisor is appointed by the club to oversee the Junior program. The junior members are instructed in marksmanship and safe gun handling. They also are eligible to earn National Rifle Association qualification medals for .22 rifle small bore. Through our club affiliation with the NRA, Armand Watts (CRSO), and the Jr. club advisor, has applied for and received several grants for new rifles, shotguns, and shooting jackets.
In addition to small bore rifle shooting, the Jr. Club also schedules a yearly visit to the Copicut Rifle Association range where the Jr. shooters are given the opportunity to try high power rifles. They also have an Annual Jr/Sr clay shoot where a Jr. and Sr. shooter team up and, shoot clays and small bore, for a combined score. In the summer of 2016, we began a Jr. Skeet instructional league, which had nine shooters the first year.
Since the organization of the Jr. Conservation Camp in 1949 by the state of Massachusetts, the club has sent a Jr. Member to the two-week camp at the club’s expense. At camp they are taught conservation work along with forestry, fish & game management, forest fire fighting, boating safety, spin & fly casting, hiking, archery, shot gun and small-bore and primitive arms rifle skills.
The campers go through firearm safety and complete the hunter safety course, making them eligible for an unrestricted hunting license at 15 years of age.
The program has grown to over 35 junior members and is broken into two nights of shooting. With the help of Armand Watts, Bruce Martin, John Hopkins, Lea Watts and the dedicated parents who are there every week to lend a hand for whatever is needed, the program will continue to grow. Since the junior member of today is the sportsman of tomorrow, the Sr. members feel their efforts in sponsoring and supporting the juniors is an investment in the future of our club.
The current Junior Club Chairman is Armand Watts. He can be reached @ 401-636-2051
